Still walking backward, she let one foot stomp down harder in exaggerated frustration. Yevrin frowned for a second, then smiled wickedly. "Then my dear Sean, you will have to admit that you are cold hearted. For by your logic, if you were kind hearted you'd tell me, and if you were a devil you'd leave me hanging." Though she was put out that he was not giving her more details, the fact that he was not giving her more details was interesting too. Judging by how closely he was keeping his story, it was not that he was simply toying with her, there was something he really did not want her to know. The only things that were a mystery were what he had seen and what he had been doing. Given those two possibilities, the mostly likely thing that he was keeping secret was the later -what point was there defending bandits who had tried to kill you? "Now your heart obviously isn't a piece of ice, if you're willing to forgive the fact I stole from you and walk me home. So it should be that you do have a good enough heart to fill in the details of your story. Am I wrong?"

"You are a devil wanting to pry into the secrets of my life," Sean shrugged. "Every human being has secrets. Some they keep from even their closest of friends. You are not even that so I must have many secrets to keep from you, no matter how kind I am." He smiled at her, she was really trying her hardest to find out the details of this story even though there was really no interest in it. Most would be satisfied with the story he had given...if he told his lover he would want no more or he would have a headache. Jamison was prone to sympathy pains.
"I don't see why you want to know so badly," Sean finally said, giving her a puzzled stare. "It's not a real interesting story...and it really doesn't affect you. Why are you pressing it so badly?"

"Because I'm curious," she answered simply. "I always have been and I always will be. If there is something I don't know I want to learn what it is." 'Also, knowledge is power,' Yevrin thought to herself, but did not say. Let him think her just an overly curious, nosy woman. She knew she was close to figuring something out; it would only be a matter of time until she fit what she had learned and what she could suppose together. She wagged her finger at him. "And I can reverse the question on you. Why am I trying so hard to find out -I'm curious by nature. But why are you trying so hard not to tell me? If it's so uninteresting there should be no problem with answering my questions."

"I'm not trying hard to hide things from you," Sean said bluntly, he might as well just tell her. This conversation was getting bothersome. He missed Jamison's sweet acceptance of everything and his lack of questioning. Quinn was also accepting, take the answer, nod his head and flee with his father's credit card. No issues.
"There's not much to tell about the situation," he said with a shrug, "I didn't do anything and they assumed that I was more than I was. They came after me and I'm lucky to be alive. That's all there is to tell. I'm not anything special. Just a guy with a lot of luck."

'It is something he very much does not want me to know,' Yevrin thought, amused rather than annoyed with how he answered her. He had emphasized that he was nothing special rather than that what he had seen was nothing special, thus confirming her belief that he was keeping secret what he had been doing there. So now she had to figure out what he had been doing there. Obviously not an innocent stroll, so what other reason could there be to walk into a wood of bandits? She smiled sweetly at Sean, then turned her back to him; she wanted to concentrate on fitting what she had learned together without worrying about tripping over something. So what did she know. That he had gone into the woods -she could assume on purpose; that he had met up with bandits; that these bandits assumed him a spy and tried to kill him; luck had gotten him out of the situation. What she did not know was why he went and why the bandits thought him a spy. She paused and then nearly struck herself for missing the bigger question. What she had been pestering him about first. Who was he. What did he do. She paused thinking over possible answers to her questions. She presumed that he went into the woods on purpose, but she had not thought of the possibility that he had gone looking for the bandits. Normal people would not, but Sean was not normal. What reason could he have to look for bandits though. She reviewed again, then nearly had to stop herself from laughing. Could it be that the bandits had been right and he had been sent to spy on them? She thought it over, and though it was a possibility, what decent spy would walk right into the middle of their hiding place. According to his story, he had thought the place empty, so he could have be spying on their hideout rather then the bandits themselves, but to what point. She tried to think of another reason to explain his actions both in his story and tonight. 'No,' she thought, an idea striking her, 'He couldn't be.' Still looking forward she called back to Sean. "New question. And I'm sure you'll be glad that it has nothing to do with your story. A matter of professional interest. Did you feel me taking your wallet or did you just happen to check it and notice that when I left your wallet disappeared? Be honest. I can take the truth if I messed up, and I need to know if I did."

Sean stretched an arm above his head, yawning deeply before turning his eyes towards the sky in silence. It was a clear sky, not a cloud to be seen and definately beautiful. There was a light peppering of stars scattered across the darkness. He smiled happily at them and reminded himself that he should bring Jamison outside one time and just look at the stars. It really put your life on this planet in perspective. One of billions.
But then she was asking him another question and he was forced to look back to the dullness of his night. Verbal banter with a thief. 'Professional interest'? Did he feel his wallet being taken or did he just notice.
"Who wouldn't have felt it being taken if you were in my position," he grinned. "Think about it logically. I was having no part in your flirting, nor was I drunk. I was completely aware that you probably wanted something from me and having you move something I was seated on...." He shook his head, "I think anyone would have felt it if they were in my position."

Yevrin nodded to herself, listening to his explanation. She had been sloppy about the fact that she had not gotten him drunk first, but it would not have been obvious to just anyone that she was after something. The person would have to either be paranoid -which Sean was not if he was fine with walking alone with a complete stranger at night- or have experience in the matter. A spy would lean toward the paranoid side. Spies thought they were always being spied on, assassins thought someone was always trying to assassinate them, and thieves thought someone was always trying to steal from them. Cautious of being robbed, cautious about where to keep his money, cautious about the information he let slip, the theory that Sean was a thief seemed the most likely of all the possibilities Yevrin could think of. She turned around to face Sean, walked right in front of him and stopped, forced him to stop as well. She took one of his hands and held it with both of hers and looked carefully at his face. She gave him a sly smile. "Tell me, how does someone who seems to be quite good at what he does make the elementary mistake of robbing a bandits' hideout without first checking to make sure it is empty."

Sean arched an eyebrow, remaining a calm exterior. Either she was incredibly smart or incredibly stupid...to jump to a conclusion like that. How could she have come to that conclusion...it baffled even him. But luckily he was almost a better actor than he was a thief/spy/retriever of goods. He masked any emotion he was tempted to bear and looked at her with complete bafflement.
"Huh?" he questioned, staring oddly at her. The next response came naturally, though it had been calculated thoughtfully...in a mere secound. "What would make you think that I was there to steal something from a group of forest bandits? I'm not exactly talented in anything save running away."

Yevrin smiled knowingly. He was an excellent actor; his facial expression gave nothing away. It was no wonder that he had been able to see through her at the bar. However, though the mind could lie and fool itself so that even it did not realize it was lying, the heart always told the truth. The reason she had taken his hand into both of hers rather than just one was to mask the action of one thumb with the rest of her digits. It was placed just below his hand, on his wrist to sense his pulse. Though possible to control one's heartbeat, it took great concentration and some time; by giving the question suddenly, she had given Sean no time for either. She felt the increase in pulse, and knew she had guessed the truth. She let his hand go, and placed her hands on her hips. "Come now, you sell yourself too short Sean. You are an extremely talented actor, just not a very good story teller. Half truths are very dangerous things, and you must be a good story teller to get away with them. The trick, you see, is to make your audience believe it is the whole truth. You failed at that. So there were very few conclusions I could think of to finish the story properly. That you are a thief is the most plausible, and has proved to be true."

Sean continued to give her an odd stare. She was a persistant one and it agrivated him. Not only did she push things when she was trying to rob him but she was still trying to push things. He was firm in the belief that he was not a thief. A thief stole things for their own benefit. He was NightShade and he took on jobs that people requested of him. If they involved stealing, then that is what he did but he did not categorize himself as a thief...it was such a crude word.
"It seems to me that you don't believe anything," he said sternly, "You refused to believe in the bar that I had no interest in you and you were proved wrong. And now you refuse to believe my story and insult me with your talk." He folded his arms across his chest, staring at her coldly....it wasn't a normal look for him but it was heartfelt.

Yevrin placed a hand to her lips, trying half-heartedly to conceal that her smile had become a full grin. She was actually quite proud of herself for not laughing outright. "It's seems I've finally managed to annoy you. I guess I can finally add human to the things I know about you. Really, I thought nothing would break that calm of yours. Though I don't see why being called a thief would annoy you. If you steal from someone you are a thief. It's nothing to be ashamed of. And since you went to that hideout with the intention of taking something that was not yours, that makes it stealing, thus you a thief. You can keep protesting all you like, but it won't do you any good." She pointed at his chest, and gave him another knowing smile. "The heart never lies Sean, or if you prefer to be more accurate, the pulse. A nice little trick don't you think?"

What a dirty trick. It bugged him more than anything else that had been said or done this very night. It bugged him more than many things and he wasn't easily bugged. Secrets were important things that were kept from others for specific reasons. He did not want people knowing his profession. It was dangerous for him and the people around him. He had many enemies in the world and this woman could blow his cover with a snap of her fingers.
"Have a nice night," he said with a wave of his hand and he immediatly turned and began to walk calmly in the opposite direction. He was going to go home and spill his injury details to Jamison, have a hot shower and then pass out in his bed.

"Hey!" Yevrin called out annoyed as Sean turned his back on her and walked away. How dare he just take off like that. It was not like she wanted him to walk her home -that would be a nuisance- but she hated being brushed aside like that. It was so rude. And he had barely given her any time to gloat over her victory. She could not stand it. She would not stand for it. She walked quickly after him. "What are you so annoyed about, hm? Don't be such a sore loser. I figured out your secret, accept it and move on. I'd have expected it if you had gotten this huffy back when I stole your wallet but this behavior is childish. I won and you lost this time. I didn't get all upset when you caught me did I? I accepted that you beat me then, and moved on. And now its my victory and you just turn, tail between your legs, to run home to your bed to hide under the covers."

"That's just it," Sean glared at her. "Did I shout out to the entire bar that you were a thief? No. Because there is a sense of honour between people, a sense of respect. I let you have your space, I treated you kindly and I even let you keep the money. How do you repay me? You shout it out for the world to hear."
"Secrets are kept for various reasons," he continued on his rant. "If you had waited until I trusted you I would have told you. But no...you were rash and impatient and rude....as a matter of fact. Thus, you have lost any chance of me trusting you with any information."
"Life is not a game where you win or lose, I don't see how you view it as such. You have compromised my secret and now my life is at stake for various reasons. So if you do believe that you have 'won' then I have lost my life. So leave me alone before you shorten my life any further."

Yevrin was next to him and fighting the urge to yell at him. She had not shouted anything, and they were alone in the street. Maybe she had been wrong and he was paranoid. She decided she did not care. She took what had been intended to be a calming breath, but the breath came and went and she was still extremely annoyed. She did not think she would be able to keep from screaming at him if she talked in a normal tone, so she hissed at him instead. "When did I 'shout' anything? And what do you think I am? Do you think I'm going to start all my conversations with people I meet telling them about the guy I met at the bar the other night and what his profession is? The Fates have seemed to decide you need no common sense it seems. Is that why you walked in on a bunch of bandits? And since you knew I was a thief, there's no harm in my knowing you're one as well. What do you think I'm going to do; turn you in to the authorities? What does that do for me? And secrets are things you don't want people to know, but that does not make them sacred. That makes them targets. Secrets are exactly what people try to ferret out, and if you can't guard them properly, then you lose them. Tough luck. So don't snap at me because you let enough slip that I could put the pieces together. And you know what, life is nothing but a game. It has its rules and those who ignore them, its winners and losers, and a start and finish. It has no grand purpose. You make the best of it, play it to the best of your abilities, enjoying it as much as possible while it lasts, then die. But I do not see how two thieves knowing that each other are thieves endangers your life in any way."
